Questions to ask the breeder
- What health testing have both parents had? Can I see the results?
- Have either of the parents had airway surgery or back problems?
- How old is the mother, and how many litters has she had?
- Can I meet the puppy and the mother, in person or on a live video call?
- For merle colors: can I see both parents' DNA color results?
- What vaccines and deworming will the puppy have before pickup?
- What does your written health guarantee cover, and for how long?
- Will you take the dog back if I can't keep it?
Check the puppy yourself
- Breathes quietly while resting
- Open nostrils, not pinched slits
- Clean skin folds with no redness or smell
- Clear eyes, no red swelling in the corner
- Curious, playful, and alert
Walk away if
- The seller refuses a live call or visit
- Payment is by gift card, crypto, or wire transfer to a stranger
- Shipping is required and new fees keep appearing
- The price is far below normal for the breed or color
- There's no written contract
Paperwork to leave with
- Signed sales contract and health guarantee
- Vaccine and deworming records
- Registration papers, if promised
- Breeder's contact information
Before pickup day
- Book a vet visit for the first week
- Start pet insurance so nothing becomes pre-existing
- Buy the basics from our new owner checklist: crate, harness, wipes, food, cooling mat
- Set up a cool, quiet space at home
