Bulldog puppies in Sacramento

Start with the rescues

Sacramento is unusually well served for bulldog rescue, which most buyers never check:

• NorCal Bully Breed Rescue is a foster-based rescue in the Sacramento area that takes in both English and French bulldogs. Because dogs live in foster homes, they can tell you about temperament and health. They ask that adopters live in the Sacramento area.
• Northern California Bulldog Rescue focuses on English bulldogs and has been asking for foster homes in the greater Sacramento area.
• NorCal French Bulldog Rescue places roughly 40 or more Frenchies a year across Northern California, and is upfront that rescue Frenchies often arrive with health or behavior needs.
• The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network covers the whole country.

Adopting an adult skips the hardest months, and rescues are usually honest about a dog's health, which is more than many sellers manage.

Finding a breeder near Sacramento

Good breeders in the region are usually small, have a waiting list, and are easy to visit, which is the whole advantage of buying locally. Sacramento, Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom and Stockton are all within a short drive, so there's no reason to buy sight unseen.

The Northern California French Bulldog Club is a good starting point for Frenchie referrals, and the Bulldog Club of America keeps referral lists for English bulldogs.

When you find someone, use our breeder questions: health testing on both parents, seeing the mother, a written contract with a genetic health guarantee, and a return clause.

Valley heat is the local problem

Sacramento summers regularly sit in the high 90s and low 100s, and flat-faced dogs cannot cool themselves the way other breeds do. In practice, for a bulldog in this climate:

• Walk early morning or after dark. Midday walks in July are dangerous, not just uncomfortable.
• Check pavement with your hand. Too hot for your palm means too hot for paws.
• Air conditioning isn't optional. Plan for the bill, plus a cooling mat and a cooling vest for hot spells.
• Never leave a bulldog in a parked car, even briefly.
• Use a harness, never a collar, since pressure on the throat makes a narrow airway worse.
• Know the emergency signs: loud raspy breathing at rest, a wide frantic tongue, collapse, or blue or grey gums. Get to an emergency vet immediately.

Ask any Sacramento-area vet you're considering how often they see flat-faced breeds and how they handle anesthesia for them. Many bulldogs need a procedure at some point, and experience matters.

What it costs here

Expect several thousand dollars for a well-bred puppy, and more for rare colors. The bigger number is lifetime care, since this breed sees more vet visits than most.
