San Diego is a good place to own a bulldog: the coastal climate is kinder to flat-faced dogs than most of the state. Buying one here, though, comes with two local risks worth knowing before you start.
We bred English and French bulldogs in Southern California for about 15 years and no longer sell puppies, so what follows is advice, not a sales pitch.
Start with the rescues
- SoCal French Bulldog Rescue is a nonprofit whose foster homes cover Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino, Imperial, Santa Barbara, Kern and Riverside counties. They rescued more than 130 Frenchies in 2024 and say their average care cost runs over $1,600 per dog, which tells you something about the state the dogs arrive in.
- Southern California Bulldog Rescue rehabilitates and rehomes English bulldogs across the region.
- The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network covers the country and states plainly that it never ships dogs, for any reason.
Adopting an adult skips the hardest months, and rescues are usually straight with you about a dog's health.
Finding a breeder
San Diego County breeders are scattered from North County to the East County. Whoever you find, visit in person, meet the mother, and use our breeder questions before paying anything.
San Diego-specific things to plan for
Puppies brought across the border. Proximity to Tijuana means some puppies sold locally were bred in Mexico and transported north, sometimes underage and without proper vaccination records. Ask where the puppy was born and raised, ask for the vaccination record with the vet's name on it, and insist on seeing the mother where the puppy lives.
East County heat. El Cajon, Santee and the inland valleys get far hotter than the coast. If you live inland, plan for air conditioning and a cooling mat, and keep walks early or late.
Military rehoming. With the bases here, families do get orders they can't take a dog on. Rehomed adults often come with full vet records and a known temperament, which can be a better first bulldog than a puppy.
Beach days need care. Bulldogs are poor swimmers, and their build makes water dangerous. Keep them out of surf, rinse salt and sand out of skin folds, and dry the folds afterwards.
The scam that targets San Diego buyers
Local searches attract sellers who claim to be nearby, then explain the puppy must be shipped. Fees for crates, insurance and vaccinations follow, and there is no puppy. Breed rescues do not ship dogs, and neither do careful breeders who haven't met you. Our scam guide covers the full pattern.
What it costs
Expect several thousand dollars for a well-bred puppy, more for rare colors, and budget for the vet care this breed needs.
