What a responsible Frenchie breeder does
- Health-tests both parents for airway, spine, and heart problems, and shares the results.
- DNA-tests for color and never pairs two merle dogs, which can cause blind or deaf puppies.
- Plans every litter, including a C-section, since most Frenchie litters can't be delivered naturally.
- Raises puppies in the home, handling and socializing them from birth.
- Keeps puppies until at least eight weeks and sends them home with vaccine records.
- Gives you a written contract with a health guarantee and a promise to take the dog back if needed.
Questions to ask
- What health testing have both parents had? Can I see results?
- Can I see the DNA color reports for both parents?
- Has either parent had airway surgery?
- Can I meet the puppy and mother on a live video call or in person?
- What does your health guarantee cover?
- What will the puppy be eating, and what vaccines will it have had?
Red flags
- Marketing focused on "exotic" or "fluffy" colors with little said about health
- Merle-to-merle pairings, or no DNA color results
- Puppies always available, or multiple breeds for sale
- Refusal to video chat or let you visit
- Payment by gift card, crypto, or wire transfer
