We raised English and French bulldogs in Orange County for about 15 years, from Santa Ana out through the rest of the county. We don't breed anymore, so here's the honest local rundown we'd give a friend.
Start with the rescues
- SoCal French Bulldog Rescue has foster homes across Orange County and the rest of Southern California. They took in more than 130 Frenchies in 2024, with average care costs above $1,600 per dog.
- Southern California Bulldog Rescue rehabilitates and rehomes English bulldogs across the region.
- The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network covers the country, and states plainly that it never ships dogs.
- OC Animal Care and city shelters get bulldogs and bulldog mixes more often than people expect. Checking weekly costs nothing.
Finding a breeder in OC
Breeders here are spread from the coast through Anaheim, Orange and into the Inland Empire. The advantage of buying locally is that you can visit, so use it: meet the mother where the puppies are raised, see health testing results for both parents, and get a written contract with a genetic health guarantee. Orange County specifics
Coastal versus inland heat. Huntington Beach and Newport stay mild, but Anaheim, Orange, Yorba Linda and Mission Viejo run much hotter inland. Walk early or after dark, test the pavement with your hand, and keep a cooling mat at home.
Beaches need care. Bulldogs are poor swimmers, and dog beaches invite trouble for a breed that can't keep its head above water easily. Keep them out of surf, and rinse and dry the skin folds afterwards.
Licensing. California requires dogs over four months to be vaccinated against rabies, and OC cities require licensing. Sort it out in the first weeks.
Vets. Ask any clinic how often they see flat-faced breeds and how they handle anesthesia for them. Most bulldogs need a procedure eventually, and experience matters.
The scam that targets OC buyers
Sellers claim to be local, then say the puppy must be shipped, and the fees begin: crate, insurance, vaccinations. There's no puppy. Real breeders and rescues don't work that way. See our scam guide.
