Southern California has plenty of English bulldog breeders, rescues, and bulldog-friendly vets, which is great news for buyers. It also has plenty of scammers, because demand is high. We raised bulldogs in Orange County for years; here's how we'd search today.
Breeders
Look for breeders within driving distance so you can meet the puppy and its mother. Breed club referral lists are a good starting point. Before you commit, use our breeder checklist: health testing on both parents, a written contract, and a breeder who asks you questions too.
Rescues and shelters
Bulldog rescues in Southern California regularly place English bulldogs of all ages. Adopting an adult can be a great fit, especially if you want a calmer dog with a known health history. Local shelters in Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Diego sometimes have bulldogs and bulldog mixes, too.
Meet before you buy
Visit, or at least do a live video call. Watch how the puppy breathes at rest, check that the skin folds are clean, and meet the mother. Ask for the puppy's vet records and the parents' health test results.
SoCal-specific things to plan for
Heat. Summer heat and hot pavement are dangerous for bulldogs. Plan for air conditioning, walks in the early morning or evening, and a cooling mat.
Local rules. Orange County cities require dog licensing and rabies vaccination. Check your city's requirements after you bring your dog home.
Vets. Choose a vet who sees a lot of flat-faced breeds and is comfortable with bulldog anesthesia, since many bulldogs need a procedure at some point.
Costs
